WHO WE ARE
We are a self advocacy group involving people with intellectual disabilities. As a group we discuss barriers that affect our lives as equal human beings.
WHAT WE DO
- Members help each other to speak up for their rights, their choices, and their citizenship.
- We teach the community about the rights, abilities, and strengths of people who have been negatively labeled with an intellectual disability.
- We provide educational and professional development opportunities for students and volunteers.
- We advocate on behalf of people who have been labeled.
OUR PARTNERSHIP
People First works in partnership with and shares in the beliefs and vision of Community Living Peterborough: That all people live in a state of dignity, share in all elements of living in their community and have the opportunity to participate effectively
WE BELIEVE
At People First - Peterborough Chapter, we believe in the rights of people. One of our goals is to educate the community about these rights. We believe rights are important because with them you have the freedom to make your own decisions and dreams. Knowing your rights and responsibilities helps you to speak up for yourself and have self respect.
HOW WE DO IT
- We are self governing.
- Members vote into office an executive who plan for the group, look after finances, and manage the office.
- We are self supporting through: fundraising and membership dues.
- Members are, but not limited to, people that have been labeled with an intellectual disability.
We believe in equality for all!
