January 20, 2012 Peterborough ON - People First Peterborough Chapter, a self advocacy group speaking up for the value, dignity, and human rights of people living with an intellectual disability, received a grant for $4,200.00 from the Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Services Board of Director's Auction Fund. Peter Bascan, president of the local People First Chapter was presented with the big cheque on Friday, January 20th by Chief Murray Rodd and Board President Nancy Martin.

"We are very grateful to the Police Board for choosing us for this grant," said Peter Bascan. "This money will go toward the Chapter's 4th Annual Self Advocate Conference this coming May. Our conference is well attended and enjoyed by self advocates from across the region. It's growing every year, so this grant is going to make a big difference in how we're able to keep up with the growth, and of course make it a valuable conference for our members," remarked Bascan.

People First Peterborough Chapter is part of a federation of chapters that span the globe. Their mission is to speak up for the rights, dignity and value of people living with an intellectual disability. The group teaches the community about the rights and abilities of people who have been negatively labeled with an intellectual disability, and provides educational and professional development opportunities for students, volunteers, peers, and members.

People First Peterborough Chapter works in partnership with Community Living Peterborough.
