2nd Annual People First Peterborough Chapter Conference: A Journey of Self Discovery for All

2nd Annual People First Conference: Josee Gauthier-Korey Earle-- by Kate Eastabrook and Laura Challice, June 01,2010

Journey to Self Discovery is the name of the conference that People First held on May 13th of this year. They had a little difficulty at first with the sound but a solution was quickly found and the day went on well.

They had 4 workshops. These workshops were 1) Take Your Journey Online: A workshop on navigating the National Film Board's Label Free Zone web site which is at www.labelfreezone.com  2) Discovery of Myself as a Sexual Being 3) Discover How You Can Take Charge of Your Life, presented by a professional Life Coach 4) Journey of Self Discovery: A round-table discussion with a panel of self advocates. Some of the self advocates were Kate Eastabrook, Ben Prins, and Lynda Nairn. These self advocates talked about their experiences so far with independence and how it came to be.

One of the local advocates in attendance was Shane Marshall who had this to say: “I enjoyed it to make new friends that I don’t know."  "(It was good) to help others speak up about their rights and treat others with respect.” commented attendee Steph Paul.

Peter Bascan, President of People First Peterborough Chapter, was there as well as Master of Ceremonies and said “I thought the People First Conference turned out great. What a good turnout. And the workshops were fantastic!”

Other people came from as far as the Ottawa area. Korey Earle, President of People First Ontario came, even though he couldn’t stay for the whole day but said he enjoyed the time he could spend with us.

Tim Hortons provided coffee, tea and Timbits for a snack and the East Peterborough Lions Club barbequed hot dogs, hamburgers and had salads and drinks available. They did a great job with lunch. For dessert there was vanilla and chocolate cake.

Laura Challice “enjoyed the conference and am looking forward to attending the next one they hold.” Kate Eastabrook said “the conference was very informative. It taught me a lot about sexuality.”

The day started just after 9:00am and ended around 4:30 and was very enjoyable overall and well done.
