- McGuinty Government Enhancing Services And Supports For People With Developmental Disabilities In Central Eastern Ontario Base Funding For Agencies To Grow To $95 Million By 2010 CAMPBELLFORD, ON, June 21 /CNW/ -
OPSEU-Picket at McGuinty's Constituency Office Targets Government's Lack of Support for People with Developmental Disabilities OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 21, 2007) - Developmental service workers from across the Kingston and Ottawa area will picket the Premier's office tomorrow to raise awareness about the government's lack of support for people with developmental disabilities, as a strike deadline approaches at four Ontario agencies.
"The government has been able to get away with underfunding services for people with developmental disabilities because most people just don't realize it's happening," said Patti Markland, president of OPSEU Local 448, Community Living Prince Edward. "We're determined to make sure everyone knows this government may talk a good line, but when it comes to making the people we support a priority, they're failing."
Employers agree the biggest problem facing developmental services is low wages. Staff are leaving the profession for equivalent positions in other fields because the pay is 25-30 percent more. Agencies can't attract enough qualified staff.
More than 1,000 staff at Community Living London, Middlesex Community Living, Elgin Association for Community Living and Community Living Chatham-Kent could be on strike starting June 23. Sixteen other agencies across Ontario, including Community Living Prince Edward, also have strong strike votes.
"We're not one of the four agencies that could be on strike in just over a week, but our members have given us a 90 percent strike mandate and we may soon have to use it," said Ms. Markland. "None of us want to go on strike. It's up to the government to come forward with the necessary funding and we hope everyone will join us in calling on the Premier to make services for the people we support a priority, before it's too late."
Where: Premier Dalton McGuinty's Constituency Office, 1795 Kilborn Ave. Ottawa When: Fri. June 22, 2007, 11:00 a.m. For more information, please contact OPSEU Patti Markland

February 16, 2007 Letter to the Editor Dear Editor:
As an organization that has long been sounding the alarm on the need for increased community supports for people who have an intellectual disability, Community Living Ontario would like to thank Trish Crawford for her balanced and compelling story, “Nowhere Else to Go,” February 16, 2007.
We share the same concern raised by the families in the article that young, vibrant people, who also have a disability, are being ‘shuttled off’ into nursing homes because there aren’t available community spaces to accommodate them. We agree this action is inappropriate and lacks careful consideration of their age, socialization, and other individual needs.
Community Living Ontario has been an active association within the developmental disability sector for more than 50 years. We have clear evidence that people who have a disability can live meaningful lives within community, with the right community supports. The best lives are lived when people live in community with their families and with personal supports, services, and friendships.
Long-term care is designed to provide ongoing nursing and medical supports to people who need them. While we acknowledge the role currently filled by long-term care facilities, it is wrong if they serve as a last resort for a desparate social service system. Further, we are opposed to a model of long-term care that is predicated upon people being removed from their homes and communities to be placed in institutional settings.
We’ve been actively working with the Ministry of Community and Social Services to increase community supports within the sector. We urge Minister Madeleine Meilleur to ensure that people aren’t being inappropriately placed into nursing homes or long-term care facilities. We will remain vigilant with the Ontario government on this issue, ensuring placement protocols and funding decisions are considered from a community-based perspective and from the perspective of individuals. Sincerely, Keith Powell, Executive Director Community Living Ontario
